The closing of the recent exhibitions from Skopje Poster Festival at the Museum of the City of Skopje completed the 10th jubilee edition of this urban graphic design cultural project.

The festival, which was held from 14 November to 04 December 2017, offered exhibitions, master-workshops, design conference, panel-discussion, portfolio reviews with mentors, entertaining evening program.

The jury concluded of graphic designers from 5 countries faced difficult task of undertaking a selection of thousands of posters from 68 countries around the world submitted at 10th Skopje Poster Competition on the theme “Artificial Reality”. Hundred finalists, including four authors from Macedonia, took part in the honorary selection of best of the best. The main prizes went to designers from Poland, Jakub Sobczak and Russia, Daria Grekova, jury special awards were given to authors of poster-artists from Macedonia and Hungary, and the remaining 6 honorary mentions were received by young designers from Canada, China, Poland, Hungary.

The jubilee Skopje Poster Festival was visited by Leks Drewinski, Lech Majewski, Reza Abedini, Sven Soric and Hrvoje Spudic, accompanied by Macedonian designers Laze Tripkov and Ivan Durgutovski. All of them as festival’s guests and jury members contributed to great design/creative enjoyment.

Within the framework of the festival, on November 17, a panel discussion on the topic “Design and social inclusion” and a design conference entitled “5 Experiences for a Successful Design” took place. The Panel Discussion was complemented by a presentation by Laze Tripkov and regarded the influence that the design has on social changes and for greater involvement of the marginalized groups. This unique event offered useful experiences and served to create the grounds for further cooperation of the government sector and international organisations on the one hand and the creative workers on the other. Details about the initiated projects will be announced soon.

Alongside the jubilee competition exhibition, accompanied by exhibitions from workshops around the world, the festival featured exhibitions on a Contemporary Macedonian Poster with participation of poster-artists from the country, workshop artworks exhibitions mentored by Reza Abedini and Lex Drewinski, as well as an exhibition of “analog” posters by the duo Sven Soric and Hrvoje Spudic – This Town Needs Posters from Croatia. Ferhat Tunc-Turkey, Aslihan Tatligil-Turkey and Johanna Pedarnig-Germany are the winners of this year Skopje Poster / International Student Poster Competition on entitled ‘Design for Peace’. Those three authors will be awarded with organisation of theirs exhibition and taking part of the jury selection in the next year 8th Skopje Poster! They also are recognized with Icograda approved certificate.Evrim Aktepe received the Icograda excellence award and honourable mentions were as follows Zhang Yichi-China, Marija Dimitrievska-Macedonia, Mary Yudina-Russia, Amadeus Fronk-Germany, Megan M. Brajkovich-USA, Minliang Li-China and Hrant Petorsyan-Armenia.

This year jury included famous Davor Brutketa from Croatia, creative director at one of the most awarded independent agencies Bruketa&Zinic, Iva Babaja, president of Icograda, Aysegul Izer from Turkey, Head of Graphic Design Department in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and Kostadin Tanchev – Dinka from Macedonia, one of the most famous Macedonian designers. Selection was very difficult as 2023 student posters were received from 44 countries around the world.

13This year motto Design for Peace was inspiring to many students, and as Skopje poster official state, “we need more student projects as they are the engine of the design of the tomorrow”!Before the Skopje Poster Festival took place organisers from Plakart gathered kids and professional designers to work mutually on the design messages on peace. The result was 15 kids drawings and messages used by the professionals to make ‘Design for Peace’ posters.

Within the Skopje Poster Festival Regional Design Conference had been held on the issue ‘State of the Design on the Balkans and Its Integration in the Educational Processes’. This conference was the initiated in order to gather around the most difficult problems of designers in the Balkan region and in order to find answers how to be competitive to Western Europe design associations and what is the model for Balkan designers to receive as more benefits from both Icograda and regional and homeland initiatives. Along the above mentioned Iva Babaja, Davor Bruketa, Aysegul Izer and Kostadin Tanchev in the conference took part also Borut Vild from Serbia, initiator and participant of more than 100 international and domestic design related projects and Mila Melank, Secretary General of ULUPUBIH – Association of Applied Artist and Graphic Designers B&H.

“The design has time context . So by imposing certain conditions by bring additional frameworks to design does not work. The design is an artifact , the poster is an artifact which operates out of time and without a longitude and latitude. So it very often lead to a situation that we designers refuse job assignments because we feel that we are not given the proper design freedom expression” said Laze Tripkov of Association ” Plakart, organisers of Skopje Poster Festival/ International Student Poster Competition.

Skopje Poster is probably the first student project that organises and delivers longest exhibitions in terms of duration. The 7th Skopje Poster finalist exhibition was open on Friday the 5th and it will be open for visitor until 20th of December. Before the start of the Skopje Poster Festival Laze Tripkov had his solo exhibition at the same place which makes it a month of poster in Skopje.

To the Big Apple audience PLAKART will present exhibition of the 50 posters finalists from the Skopje Poster competitions from 2008 to 2012.

1Association of Graphic Designers Plakart has its first exhibition in New York, but second in the USA, after the opening of the exhibition of Ecologic Poster competition from 2010, that was organized by prof. Cedomir Kostovic at the Missouri State University.

The posters  that will be exhibited at the MC Gallery will include works from the student participants and finalists from the first five competitions: “Tolerance”, “Power vs poverty”, “Ecologic”, “HIV / AIDS” and “Money for free”. From a total of 10.000 submitted posters, the 50 finalist posters were selected by members of the international jury, including 15 prize winning posters with the highest recognition, and the remaining 35 were selected as honorary mentions. Authors are student designers coming from Israel, Poland, Iran, China, Turkey, Belarus, Mexico, USA, Ecuador, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Russia, Germany, France, and of course from Macedonia.

The exhibition is an initiative that came naturally after 5 years of Skopjeposter as urban design project with an international character. After Paris, Istanbul, Warsaw, New York City is the right place to once again mark the 5 year story of Skopje Poster festival.“- said Laze Tripkov of Plakart.
