Skopje Poster Festival, in the realization of its mission, has planned to act in the field of raising social awareness for global challenges. Тhis year the challenge is entitled “Inclusion, Not Exclusion”.

Plakart – The Association of Graphic Designers and the Council of the SPF decided that the theme of the 12th European poster competition should be inclusion of the most vulnerable groups in the society.

Students from the European continent, through their works, have expressed a firm stand for fighting stigmas and taboos related to persons from the social margin, discriminated and inappropriately involved individuals and social groups. Students from the entire continent, from Portugal to Turkey, from Great Britain to Russia, participated in the contest “Inclusion, Not Exclusion”.

The main prize received by 8 authors is concluded of travel and participation in a week-long off-town workshop in Prespa, where the participants, together with highly renowned mentors from Switzerland (Stephan Bundi) and Macedonia (Kostadin Tanchev-Dinka), will work on creating additional artworks that will be exhibited as part of a traveling tour of the 12th edition of the SPF, which will start on July 15th.

Winners of the contest “Inclusion, Not Exclusion” are: Denis Nesmeyanov (RUS), Ece Batur (TUR), Eduardo Ribeiro (POR), Luka Prstojevic (SRB), Stefan Simonovski (MKD), Teodora Mladenovska (MKD), Klaudia Zablocka (POL), Gina Park (POL).

As an announcement for the exhibition of the competition’s finalists, which will be opened on June 18 in YCC, yesterday (within the frameworks of the 12th Skopje Poster Festival), on the plateau and the park, in the circle of the Youth Cultural Center, children from the Special Primary School “Idnina” (“Future”) were drawing using different techniques, in order to raise awareness of their equal role in society. The artworks of the children will be offered for sale for humanitarian purposes at the opening of the exhibition on June 18, when donors will be able to meet with these authors.

The project “Inclusion Not Exclusion” organized with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Skopje, will have its finale with a series of exhibitions compiled from the award-winning works of the finalists and complemented by all the other works created by the winners during the workshop in Prespa.

Social inclusion is the process of improving the terms on which individuals and groups take part in society – improving the ability, opportunity and dignity of those disadvantaged on economic and social basis.

The European continent is considered one of the most developed continents on the globe, but regardless it is faced with a huge challenge, which is the social exclusion. Stereotypes, stigmas, superstitions based on gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity, or disability status are causes of the marginalisation and discrimination of people with disabilities.

INTRODUCTION OF THE TOPIC

Agenda 2020 (EU Programme) and Programme of Action of the World Summit for Social Development and Sustainable Goals for Development (UN Programme) are only small portion of the strategies that tackle issues of/or related to social inclusion in which people with disabilities and their needs are accordingly addressed and consequently include strong commitments against their marginalisation.

Accordingly, is implementation of economic growth strategies properly considered to have sufficient impact on improvements regarding social inclusion and how do we precisely measure it? Furtherly, taking under consideration and analyzing unemployment rates in Western Europe (8,5%) and in Eastern Europe (5,3% – not including EU non-member countries), can we conclude that we are facing positive and definitive results on development on the issue of social integration of people with disabilities?

Even more crucially, shall this issue be treated partially, fragmentary or should we approach it more multidisciplinary, to enlarge the process of inclusion with goals that will improve the quality of life and the living standard? Foremost and hugely important, people with disability have to be involved in the processes of creating policies and improvement strategies, in particular to contribute to raising awareness of the public, to educate and underline the need of appropriate treatment and openness to marginalized social groups which will lead to advancement of the social cohesion!

International prize-winning competition on the topic:

SMILE 🙂 „Everywhere 4 everyone“

On World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day and throughout 2018, we will celebrate the strength and reach of our global network, and the contribution of our staff and around 14 million volunteers through the theme “Everywhere for everyone”.

This year we aim to broaden the public’s understanding of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement by highlighting the diversity of our work and the universality of our approach. We’ll be using a simple call to action to share one of the most universal symbols – a smile. A smile is a universal sign of happiness, comfort, satisfaction. For a volunteer, it means a job well done. For someone affected by crisis, it can mean someone is ready and willing to help. We want to harness the power of this symbol to celebrate the dedication and impact of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, and their volunteers and staff. Our aim is to highlight how the Movement is addressing humanitarian challenges through original, innovative and unusual approaches. Focusing on community-led action and impact, we will share the positive stories of change and hope with the call to action “share what makes you smile”.

During the month of May, three students from Macedonia got a chance to follow the steps of Polish poster masters.

As a result of the competition for poster on the topic “Republic of Macedonia as a Tourist Destination” (#GOMK), organised by Plakart, Polish Embassy and Museum of City of Skopje, three main award winners had a chance to go on a one-week study visit to Poland. The trip was the reward to Anastasia Jovcheska from FON University and Ana Petrova and Ivan Durgutovski from European University received for their posters selected by the jury – Ryszard Kaja (designer and illustrator, Poland), Laze Tripkov (Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Macedonia), Jacek Multanowski (Ambassador of Poland to the Republic of Macedonia), Tomislav Mikulcic (Director of the Museum of the City of Skopje, Macedonia), Lasko Dzurovski (founder of Totem Design Studio, Macedonia).

Posters and contemporary art museums, graphic – design faculties, meetings with renowned designers were only part of the study trip program.

After their return to Macedonia we asked them to share their experience with their colleagues from their homeland and abroad who may find inspiration and motivation in creative expression, professional development.

Ana Petrova, graduate studies at the Faculty of Design and Art – European Faculty

An incredible journey to a place full of designs perfect in details. Beautiful buildings, mild salads, many posters and creative solutions, unforgettable company in cities that must be seen again. So far the most fun, creative and inspiring journey for me.

Anastasija Jovcheska, graduate studies at the Faculty of Design and Multimedia – FON University

Nice week with nice people in an even more beautiful place – Poland. Three different cities, a million awesome places that could not be described in words. Our short stay was wonderful, and most importantly, very creative and inspiring. Poland is my favorite place and potentially every following destination <3

Ivan Durgutovski, Master’s Degree at the Faculty of Design and Art – European Faculty

For me, personally, this is a great recognition and a stepping stone that enabled me to be part of an extraordinary study trip that changed me in many ways. Thanks to Plakart / Skopje Poster Festival and the Polish Embassy in the Republic of Macedonia, three winners of the main prize have had an opportunity to visit Poland and get acquainted with the way in which this country operates on a local and national level, and at the same time to become familiar with the core of Polish spirit and creativity, through the difficult historical experiences that this nation has passed.

Traveling is vital for every creator, because we gain new experiences, we get to know new cultures and their values, all of which directly reflects on our creative expression and changes our perceptions. Among other things, we had the opportunity to visit the most famous universities, museums, cultural and design centers, artistic hubs and at the same time to get acquainted with eminent persons from the Polish artist and designer scene. Thanks to this, our network of contacts has grown, and thus the opportunities for educational development throughout future cooperation at the international level are increasing.

The struggle and perseverance of the Polish people are definitely reflected in their working processes and successes in the field of art and design.

I sincerely hope that this experience will be additional motivation for students to engage more in this competition, and all student competitions in general. Competitions are the best student exercise! 🙂

Our poster shows in Serbia, Lithuania and Portugal were just the beginning of the Plakart and the Poster Poster Festival postreview exhibition season of 2017.

In June, UNDP Macedonia invited Plakart for cooperation within the conference on the topic “Improving services for people with disabilities”.

Within the framework of the conference, which took place on June 12 and 13 in Ohrid – Republic of Macedonia, the posters from 8. Skopje Poster Festival with focus issue “Enabled For Disabled” were designed by students of visual communications from 25 countries.

This two-day event brought together the most affected and targeted parties that raise issues for the needs of the most vulnerable social category, including the non-governmental sector, international organizations, diplomatic missions in the country and the public sector and state institutions. Participants and supporters of this conference were the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs and Minister of Local Government Mrs. Mila Carovska and Mr. Souheil Fazliu, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the Republic of Macedonia Mrs. Renate Kobler, Deputy Head of the Mission of the Swiss Embassy Mr. Stefanie Tomagian, the UN and UNDP Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Macedonia Mrs. Louisa Vinton.

President of Plakart, Gere Tripkov and Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Mrs. Mila Carovska

Topics were divided in two-day sessions and aimed at improving of the integration of people with disabilities, deinstitutionalisation, opportunities to support active involvement in the labor market, encouraging institution to provide policies that would facilitate their inclusion in social processes.

The Plakart and SPF exhibition within the conference proves that the poster is an art that takes a prime place among the media that offer a quick, readable and concrete message. This has been noted by the great interest of the participants in the conference, representatives of the diplomatic corp and the representatives of the local and governmental administration.

Poster as an association of visual artists continues with the support of initiatives aimed at raising the awareness of the thorny issues of the 21st century.
